december is for cynics

hello all.

i went to a battle of the bands thursday night. i'm just gonna give you a short run down of all the bands that played.

first up, daniel riddick. one guy with an acoustic guitar. he was pretty good. i liked him. everybody cheered when he cussed in his songs which i didn't quite understand.

second, tobacco tones. now if you're like me, you'd expect tobacco tones to be a ska band because every band i've ever heard with "tones" in their name was a ska band, but these guy were like a mix of surf, country and elvis. it was very interesting and quite enjoyable actually until some girls from the crowd started doing the swim. i felt they were taking away from the band and the swim just looks stupid.

third, a bluegrass band that i dont remember their name. i'm not a huge fan of bluegrass, but some of it sounds kind of cool. these guys weren't very good, but they were kinda young so i'll cut them a little slack.

fourth, a brave new world. these guys were my favorites. they were a really awesome punk band that i would would compare their style to bands like rise against. their bass player was all over the place. great stage prescense. amazing drummer.

fifth, a fine line(i think). this was 2 guys and a girl that played acoustic emo. i didn't think they were all that great, but i'll give them props for the girl playing violin on one song.

sixth, the grinding stone. this was a 70's style, almost psychedelic, rock band. not really my thing. i'm not into music where it sounds like everybody has a solo at the same time. as ben said, "i like syncopation."

seventh and last, blame james. they had a little variety, some reggae and some funk. they were really talented, but i didn't like the fact that they just played covers, "higher ground"(the red hot chilli peppers version) and "bad fish" by sublime. their guitarist had some crazy dance going on tho.

well, blame james won. in my opinion, they won cause they played popular songs. a brave new world got second, which kind of surprised me. the judges didn't seem like the type to like punk rock. i think they deserved first place tho and i told them that. the battle of the bands is an anual thing so hopefully we'll be in it next year.

i don't know if i mentioned this, but the bobble heads might be playing in the talent show at the winter youth conference. maybe, keep your fingers crossed. hopefully we wont have anymore setbacks.

afi, alkaline trio, streetlight manifesto, yellowcard, reel big fish, fall out boy, against me! and strike anywhere have new albums coming out next year.

song of the day(1): streetlight manifesto - "a moment of silence"

song of the day(2): bad religion - "supersonic"

song of the day(3): ten foot pole - "the getaway"

song of the day(4): afi - "days of the phoenix"

quote of the day: "if we light ourselves on fire we can go anywhere!" -stormy - sealab 2021

until we meet again...
